RideToConquerCancerFor the last 7 years Team Kortright (a group associated with Kortright Presbyterian Church) has been participating in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer benefitting the Princess Margaret Cancer Research Centre.  During that time the Team has raised over $100,000. As part of their fundraising efforts for the last 5 years they have held a Family Country Dance and Silent Auction in the church gymnasium. This year’s dance was held on May 2nd and was a great success raising over$3700.

It was a wonderful evening with music for the dance being provided by the Bill Beatty Band including two square dancing sessions (for beginners and experts) called by Sharon Grose.  The band was augmented later in the evening with various members of the Fletcher family much to the delight of everyone.

The highlight of the evening was the awarding of the silent auction items which included everything from an electric guitar and amp, to a wide variety of artwork and crafts, and even a trio of hammocks and some theatre tickets.

The excitement was increased by the live auctioning of a pair of Denise Zimmer’s famous homemade pies. Denise is something of a legend around KPC with her pies always containing a very generous portion of filling. Her blueberry pie started a bidding war that resulted in the final offering being $110! The pie was then cut up and sold off at $5 a slice. Thanks John!

Another highly successful event this year was an Art Sale featuring the work of local artist Nancy McNabb and a number of others. This was the first time they had tried this type of event and it too was very successful raising over $3000 for the cause.

The team is very grateful to everyone from the community that supported them this year and look forward not only to this year’s ride, but to representing Kortright Church and the University Village community in the future.

The Ride is a two-day, 200km, journey from Toronto to Niagara Falls with an overnight stop at Mohawk College in Hamilton that takes place this year on June 13th & 14th.  Each participant in the Ride pledges to raise a minimum of $2500 dollars to qualify for the Ride itself. The members of Team Kortright are (from left to right) Daniel Bartozzi, Brian Watson, Denise Zimmer, Frank Ridder, Dennis Gray, and Ben Robinson (seated). More information about the ride and the team can be found on their webpage at  http://www.conquercancer.ca/goto/TeamKortright.
